5 Essentials for Storing in Non-Climate Controlled Storage

Date:

Not everyone needs a climate-controlled storage unit. Sometimes, a regular non-climate controlled unit works just fine. These units are usually cheaper and easy to find. But since they don’t protect your items from temperature changes, moisture, or humidity, you have to be careful with what and how you store things.

To keep your belongings safe and in good shape, here are five important things to remember when using non-climate controlled storage.

1. Use Proper Packing Materials

When storing in a place that doesn’t control temperature or humidity, your packing materials matter a lot. Cardboard boxes are okay for short-term use, but over time, they can get soft or moldy. Instead, try to use plastic bins with tight-fitting lids.

These help keep out moisture and bugs. Also, wrap your fragile items in bubble wrap or thick towels to prevent them from breaking. If you’re packing clothes or fabrics, use vacuum-sealed bags to keep them safe from dampness and pests.

2. Keep Items Off the Floor

Moisture is one of the biggest problems in non-climate controlled storage. Rain or humidity can sometimes cause damp floors, especially if the unit is in a basement or on ground level. To protect your things, never place boxes or furniture directly on the floor.

Instead, use wooden pallets or shelves to raise your items. This helps air move around and keeps everything dry.

3. Choose What You Store Carefully

Not all items do well in a non-climate controlled space. For example, things like electronics, photos, leather, wood furniture, or anything that can melt, warp, or rust should be avoided. These items are sensitive to heat, cold, and humidity.

On the other hand, metal tools, plastic items, camping gear, and sealed dishes usually store well. So, before moving your things in, take a moment to think about what can really handle changes in temperature.

4. Use Moisture Control Products

Even if you do everything right, moisture can still build up inside a storage unit. That’s why it helps to place moisture control products like silica gel packets or DampRid containers in your space.

These products help soak up extra water in the air and reduce the risk of mold or mildew. Replace them regularly to keep your non climate controlled storage unit dry and fresh.

5. Label and Organize Everything

In a storage unit without climate control, it’s important to be organized so you don’t have to dig through everything. Label all boxes clearly and group similar items together. Try to leave a little path between your boxes so you can walk inside and find what you need.

If you’re storing for a long time, keep a list of what’s in the unit. That way, you’ll remember exactly where things are and what condition they were in when you packed them.

Conclusion

Using a non-climate controlled storage unit can be a smart and budget-friendly choice. But to make sure your things stay in good shape, you have to pack smart, stay organized, and be prepared for temperature and humidity changes.

By following these five simple tips, you can feel confident that your belongings are safe and ready whenever you need them again.
